Blessed Are You
This icon depicts the Visitation, Mary’s visit to her kinswoman, Elizabeth, after the angel has told her she is to bear God’s son. Mary must have been scared and maybe unsure Elizabeth would believe her tale. Elizabeth, past childbearing age, was pregnant with John the Baptist, and when Mary approached, the baby leapt in her womb and she realized that Mary’s baby would indeed be God’s son. I wanted the icon to convey something about the trust between the two women, and how they helped each other work out what God was doing in their lives.
